NIEUWS UIT VALPOLICELLA
BERTANI WILL NOT PRODUCE AMARONE CLASSICO 2014

The historic winery in the Valpolicella region has chosen not to produce Amarone Classico, the wine that has symbolized it since 1958 and obtained through the original and traditional “natural drying” of the grapes. The weather of this season made it impossible to attain the quality standard that the winery has set for itself for over half a century.

Bertani, the historic winery from Valpolicella and beacon in the Italian enological scene, will not produce Amarone Classico 2014. A precise choice with a resounding economic impact, supported by a firm convincement that for Bertani is much more than just a philosophy: an exhaustive quest for quality through natural partial drying, can’t be done in a constantly rainy year like the 2014 «We believe that who make Amarone with a natural partial drying should inevitably skip this year to be consistent with one’s own style and identity and to follow the purest tradition. We made this choice for Bertani Amarone Classico,» explains Emilio Pedron, CEO of Bertani Domains Group. «It was an important decision, costly, but consistent with our style and our identity, and above all, highly respectful of our consumers and customers.»

Since 1958, its first year of production, dutifully of its tradition, Bertani Amarone Classico is made through high-level handicraft, with a specific technical expertise and the use of a unique, high-quality fruit: perfect, intact grapes laid to rest exclusively on bamboo cane racks (rush mats), in naturally aired rooms on the hills of Valpolicella Classica . Thus partial drying is entirely natural, a distinctive aspect that confers to the Bertani Amarone Classico a unique style and an exclusive longevity. In this natural process the quality of the grapes becomes crucial, even more than the method (partial drying) that this wine is obtained from. At Bertani it’s no coincidence that rather than saying “natural drying” we say “laying the grapes to rest”. This year’s climate trend—temperatures that stayed below average, less hours of sunlight and anomalous precipitation levels—kept the grapes from reaching a quality sufficient to guarantee the result required by the company standards.

That’s why Bertani decided to be the first winery in Valpolicella to announce its choice to not produce Amarone Classico, vintage 2014, as already done for other peculiar years, as 2002 and 1982.

«We must recall that Bertani Amarone Classico is a “rare” example where the bottle, label, method of production and wine style have stayed the same since the first year of production,» adds Mr Pedron, who underscores that the firm belief to not proceed with a “forced” partial drying (although allowed by the Production Regulations) influence this strategy as well. «In fact, you can make Amarone in technological drying rooms with partial drying with a result that is independent from the weather variable; in this case, even the trend post-harvest climate has no qualitative influence to the final product, since partial drying takes place in rooms with monitored standardized parameters, like humidity and ventilation. Bertani has always produced its Amarone Classico exclusively by natural partial drying, and if we had made different choices we couldn’t have reached that quality and the style that for over half a century has been our element of recognition and distinction around the world.»

Therefore there will be no Amarone Classico 2014 with the label “Bertani”, a company that wishes to protect the image of a name that has always been a symbol of reliability and consistency.

* http://www.vinoalvino.org/blog/2013/10/franco-biondi-santi-che-questanno-non-vendemmia.html

THE BIRTH OF THE CHIANTI CLASSICO
CO.
The Chianti Classico Wine Consortium has founded a company that will handle marketing for the denomination. For the first time a tutelary consortium uses a very innovative tool to meet new market challenges.

Following presentation of the “Chianti Classico revolution” – the revamping of the denomination that included a bold restyling of the Black Rooster trademark and introduction of a new wine at the summit of the Chianti Classico qualitative pyramid – the consortium has brought to completion another important project to valorize the denomination and make it more competitive.
It’s creation of the Chianti Classico Co., wholly owned by the Chianti Classico Wine Consortium, whose primary aim is to valorize and promote the Black Rooster brand in all its aspects. An operation that will even further strengthen a trademark, the Black Rooster, already world-famous and an icon of Italian enological excellence.
Heading the newborn company will be Michele Zonin (Castello d’Albola) as president, while Davide Gaeta will be CEO.
Board members are: Sergio Zingarelli (Rocca delle Macie and consortium president), Carlo Maria Mascheroni (Castello di Volpaia), Alessandro Palombo (Luiano), Francesco Daddi (Castello La Leccia), Sandro Sartor (Ruffino) and Giuseppe Liberatore, general director of the Chianti Classico Wine Consortium.
“It’s the first time in the history of tutelary consortiums”, says the president of the consortium, Sergio Zingarelli, “that a producers’ association has set up an external organization working to valorize and promote a denomination: the Chianti Classico Co. will be the authentic armed branch of the marketing area”.
With this tool the Chianti Classico Wine Consortium, Italy’s oldest vintners association, established in 1924, provides an innovative idea for facing the challenges of the future and increasingly aggressive international competition.
Not yet revealed in detail, its range of action will in any case reflect the efficiency and dynamism that has always distinguished Chianti Classico winemakers. From now on the Black Rooster DOCG can count on a great new tool that just months from now will be broadening the frontiers of Chianti Classico wine.
N.B. The consortium is confidant that the professionalism of the press to which this communication is addressed will prevent it from changing or abbreviating the name of “Chianti Classico”. Writing “Chianti” instead of “Chianti Classico” is an error that radically changes the news we are imparting because Chianti and Chianti Classico are, in fact, two different DOCGs with separate and distinct production territories, histories and consortiums.
A valid synonym for “Chianti Classico” would be “Black Rooster”, icon and trademark for the Chianti Classico DOCG.
Thanks for your attention.

Press release Cantine Librandi enters Italia del Vino – Consorzio The convention of the affiliates of ‘Italia del Vino – Consorzio’ increased its base by receiving one of the brands icon of Calabrian oenology: Cantine Librandi by Cirò Marina (Kr). Antonio and Nicodemo Librandi, tenants since three generations, developed this tradition by opening a production that invested much in order to rediscover, safeguard, and enhance the Calabrian autochthonous species of vine. For instance, this happened as for the experimental vineyards of magliocco, arvino, mantonico bianco, and pecorello, protecting the viticultural germ plasm that risked the extinction by bringing it to attention and appreciation of the markets all over the world. Italia del Vino is a private Consorzio that since 2009 gathers 13 among the most important realities of our wine growing and producing section, all widely present on world markets: Banfi S.r.l., Cantina Lunae S.a., Cantine Ferrari Fratelli Lunelli S.p.A., Casa Vinicola Sartori S.p.A., Casa Vinicola Zonin S.p.A., F.lli Gancia S.p.A., Gruppo Italiano Vini, Marchesi di Barolo, Medici Ermete & Figli S.r.l., Santa Margherita S.p.A., Società Agricola Drei Donà, Terredora S.a, Librandi Antonio e Nicodemo Spa. Press release: 40 Years of Esporão 1973–2013: All the Way from Revolution to Benchmark What began in 1973—on the threshold of the Portuguese revolution—as the ambitious and pioneering project of two wine afficionados, has grown over the course of forty years into a benchmark concern, one that has set new standards—and not only for Portugal. As winner of the European Sustainability Trophy at the Green Awards, as a repeat-winner Company of the Year and as pioneer in the matter of varietal diversity, Esporão is proud to be counted among the international avant-garde. But at the same time, this winery with its production of more than ten million bottles, which are consumed in some fifty countries worldwide, is extremely successful from the business standpoint. How do these work together? Thanks to a visionary mind and an extended family that works wonderfully well with one another…   Esporão is indeed a family business, one that willingly undertakes responsibility for natural resources, for co-workers and for future generations. João Roquette, the 39 year-old son of founder José H. Roquette, has managed the company since 2006 as CEO, and has come down firmly on the side of practical sustainability:               ‘It is a great challenge to achieve an appropriate balance between the social, ecological and commercial aspects of a business. Our motivation in doing this is not only the continual improvement of our wines and olive oils for our customers, but also a consciousness of our responsibility toward all individuals connected with Esporão.’   Esporão has taken on the role of national as well as international ambassador for the up-and-coming region Alentejo. On the 27th of September 2013, the winery toasted the fortieth anniversary of its founding. Following a master-class led by chief oenologue David Baverstock, featuring matured wines from Esporão, they celebrated the jubilee in their cellar. Co-workers, members of the media and customers from all over the world came to commemorate this anniversary with the extensive Roquette family. And there was every reason to do so! History Today, the brand Esporão is inseparably connected with the Alentejo. In Portugal’s largest wine-region, Esporão has been considered the pioneer in matters of quality since 2007. This remarkable saga began in 1973, when the two visionaries José H. Roquette and Joaquim Bandera started the Esporão project under its original name Finagra. Both partners were driven from the very start by a concept of quality, and wanted but one thing: to produce the best wines possible. It was not easy at first; after the 1974 political revolution in Portugal the winery was nationalised in January of 1975. In 1978, part of Herdade do Esporão was returned to family possession, but under obligation to sell their grapes to a nationalised cooperative. Only in 1985—nearly ten years later, after the entire estate was returned to the family—did they harvest their initial vintage of Esporão. The first Esporão wines were released on the market in 1987, and from this point, the success story took off. In 2013—forty years after its founding and twenty-six years after their first release—Esporão produced ten million bottles, and exported wine to more than fifty different countries.   Ecological Pioneer All told, Esporão owns 660 hectares of vineyard, along with 95 hectares of olive groves. Out of these, 177 hectares of grapes, olives and orange orchards are organically farmed. The remaining parcels are cultivated using integrated production techniques. In addition to the vineyards in Reguengos de Monsaraz (170 km south of Lisbon) there are 11 hectares in Portalegre (northeast of Lisbon) and 150 hectares in Perdigões (near Reguengos) in production. Additionally, in 2008 the estate acquired the Quinta dos Murças in the Douro Valley, where the oldest grapevines are up to 65 years of age. In 2010, Esporão began to offer a top-quality matured brandy named Magistra in its portfolio, produced in the region Lourinhã (north of Lisbon), which along with Cognac and Armagnac is one of three grape-growing regions dedicated to the production of brandy.   Portugal‘s Most Important Ambassador Esporão has been exporting its wine since 1989; the three most important markets are the USA, Brazil and Angola. One factor in this success has to do with the closeness to the consumer brought about by the establishment of their own distribution networks in the USA (Esporão Wine and Olive Oils), Angola (Dbrands) and in Brazil (Qualimpor). They achieved their first quality-certification in 1997; Esporão is certified ISO 9001 since 2005, and as of 2013 under the environmental management standard ISO 1400. In 2010, Esporão was the first Portuguese wine estate to begin using corks certified by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), in some of its bottlings.   Trophies and Awards The estate has been the recipient of frequent awards and accolades: chosen twice (2001 and 2008) as Company of the Year (Revista de Vinhos), Producer of the Year 2012 (Wine), and has won among others titles like Best Wine-Tourism Programme, and Best Portuguese Oenologue—particularly important to the Roquette family is their Sustainability Prize that they won at the 2013 Green Awards, awarded by British magazine The Drinks Business.   Research and Progress The success story of Esporão has its roots in the work of Australian-born oenologue David Baverstock, who together with Luis Patrão (red wine) and Sandra Alves (white wine and rosé) has chosen a courageous way far off the beaten-path, becoming a pioneer and prime-mover in matters of Portuguese viticulture. Some of the things that make Esporão exciting are typified by the attention they pay to scientific and empirical research, like their ampelographic vineyard, their comparison-wines made with organic or integrated farming, companion fermentations with autochthonous or cultured yeasts—and much more. The 9.7-hectare ampelographic vineyard consists of 189 rows of vines, each one planted with a different grape variety.   Wine-tourism In the past year, the Herdade do Esporão’s restaurant and their own winebar in the middle of the vineyard hills have come to figure among the hotspots of Alentejo; the fruit and vegetables served here are grown in the estate’s own organic gardens. And the spread-out winery offers many themed and guided tours, all conducted with Portuguese conviviality. At the estate, visitors are granted remarkable insights into the wine and olive oil production, along with experiencing highlights of nature and archaeology. In February of 2012, Esporão was singled-out with the award Best of Wine Tourism by the Alentejo Tourism Authority.

A New Look for Monte Velho Like the signature dish for a top chef, for the wine estate Herdade do Esporão it’s certainly their most famous brand: Monte Velho. The red wines as well as the white reflect those characteristics most typical of the region: rich in aroma, elegant on the palate and great fun to drink; it’s a wine-brand that since 1992 has won many awards for its relationship between price and quality. In the course of Esporão’s 40th anniversary celebration, Monte Velho has been relaunched with a new label—the packaging now has lower environmental impact, with 420 g bottles and simple cardboard cartons, now printed using only a single colour ink. The grapes are the product of integrated viticulture.  _____________________________________________________________________ Source of supply in Holland: www.grapy.nl Monte Velho Red 2012, 0.75 l 7,99 € incl. Sad news

Alessandro Masnaghetti, Kyle Phillips and more
Alessandro Masnaghetti, Kyle Phillips and more

Kyle Phillips (American winewriter, living in Italy) has passed away, couldn’t win his struggle against mother nature’s cruel way of telling us we are nothing more than she allows us to be……… I have known Kyle for many years, appreciating his humour, his hard work (I always saw him to be the second to arrive and certainly the last to leave at numerous tastings, like at Nebbiolo Prima in Alba), his respect for wines and winemakers, always a friendly word, even though it was not his style. We shared quite a few things, like the ’70 music of the Grateful Dead, traditional winemakers and our criticism on the American society he left so many years ago, but which was still challenging him. I was always looking forward to his comments on American politics and his way of playing with ignorant, silly (more often stupid) republicans, making a fool of themselves (they are very good at it). He wrote me last week that the end was near and asked me to drink a good glass of wine while thinking of him. I did and will continue doing so as long as I can. He was a great person, I will cherish many great wines with great memories of him, being more than just a colleague. To me he was the gentle giant, the kind and loving ‘Gompie’ from a ancient TV-series in the Netherlands , someone you couldn’t resist to like and love. Kyle, it was a privilege to know you, taste with you, chat with you, toast to you with wines you loved. I wish his family the strength they need to overcome this sad period and will realize with them, that we have known, loved and respected a wonderful human being. Kyle Philips: in my thoughts forever. Three Glasses and Three Stars to Argentiera Doc Bolgheri Superiore 2010 and important awards to Giorgio Bartholomäus 2010  Donoratico, 21 October, 2013 Produced for the first time in 2003, Argentiera Doc Bolgheri Superiore was an immediate success with national and international general public and experts who consider it one of the wines that better represents the peculiarities of the Bolgheri appellation. The 2010, the latest vintage to be released, was awarded both Three Glasses by Gambero Rosso and Three Stars by the Veronelli Guide. Argentiera Doc Bolgheri Superiore is the wine that better represents the estate belonging to the Corrado Brothers and Marcello Fratini. The winery, overlooking the magnificent hills above Donoratico, was established by the Fratinis who intended to produce high-quality wines that really reflected the characteristics of the Bolgheri appellation area. The estate now has 75 ha of vineyards in production cultivated with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah. These are the grapes varieties that have contributed to the worldwide fame of the Doc Bolgheri in the last decades. The name Argentiera refers to the mineral character of the soil of the vineyards. The estate is actually located close to the famous Colline Metallifere whose metal ores were firstly exploited by the Etruscans. This peculiar soil composition gives all Argentiera wines the freshness and the aromas that today’s wine lovers from all over the world are looking for. Argentiera Doc Bolgheri Superiore 2010 (45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc) is the result of a very special vintage that enhanced the minerality and the elegance that fully reflect the estate’s philosophy. The grapes for this wine are carefully selected in the highest vineyards – 180 m to 200 m asl. They are protected by macchia vegetation and open to the beneficial influence of the sea. Argentiera is the estate in the Bolgheri area that is located closest to the sea and the one with the highest vineyards. A unique microclimate and soil composition that give wines of unmistakable personality. As a result, Argentiera Doc Bolgheri Superiore is considered one of the top wines of the appellation. Not only was Argentiera Doc Bolgheri Superiore given prestigious awards, but also Giorgio Bartholomäus 2010, one of the two monovarietal wines of Argentiera, received Three Stars in the Veronelli Guide and 97 points in “Falstaff”. This wine is a 100% Merlot and the famous Austrian wine magazine has selected it as the second top wine in a tasting of Costa degli Etruschi wines. Giorgio Bartholomäus and the other monovarietal wine of the estate, Opheliah Maria (100% Cabernet Sauvignon), are the proof that the Bolgheri area is a great wine region. As a matter of fact, it can also produce top-quality monovarietal wines that display a strong bond with their region. Not surprisingly, the Fratinis have focused their attention on this area since the beginning. These monovarietal wines are the proof of the firm belief characterizing all decisions taken by the whole team of Argentiera. Press agent Patrizia Cantini   The Veronese wine sector takes its project in support of opera to Hong Kong, with bottles signed by great names in the worlds of music, art and sport The initiative entitled “I Vini del Centenario” (“The Wines of the Centenary”), created by the Verona Arena Foundation, Sartori and the four Veronese consortia – Bardolino, Custoza, Soave and Valpolicella – makes its international debut  “I Vini del Centenario” – the project created by the Verona Arena Foundation, the Sartori Wine Company and the four Veronese Wine Producers’ Consortia of Bardolino, Custoza, Soave and Valpolicella to contribute towards spreading appreciation of Italian opera around the world – is crossing the borders of Italy and coming to Hong Kong. And this time the Emergency charity will also benefit. This initiative, which was previewed at the Vinitaly fair on 7th April 2013 with the participation of T.V. celebrity Antonella Clerici, was officially launched on 1st June on the occasion of “Arena di Verona 2013 – the show is about to begin”, the opening event of the celebrations for the Arena’s Centenary: this featured a performance on the largest stage in the world by Spanish operatic superstar Plácido Domingo together with the equally famous tenor Andrea Bocelli. Now the “I Vini del Centenario” project is about to become even bigger and will soon arrive in Hong Kong, thanks to the efforts of the Sartori Wine Company, the Domani Restaurant and the Verona Arena Foundation. The proceeds of the evening will be donated to Emergency. The event will take place on 18th October, from 7.30 p.m. onwards, at the Domani Restaurant (Level 4, Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Admiralty, Hong Kong). In this refined venue, pride of place will be given to the large-size bottles signed by some important artists and well-known celebrities in the worlds of opera, sport, culture, food and wine and other sectors. Among them are Plácido Domingo, Renzo Piano, Gino Strada, the Inter Milan footballers Diego Milito, Javier Zanetti and Esteban Cambiasso and Formula 1 Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso. Also attending the dinner will be Andrea Sartori – who will conduct personally the charity auction on behalf of his family’s company – Cecilia Strada, the President of Emergency International, and Italian Consul General Alessandra Schiavo. The founder of Emergency, Gino Strada, will thank the guests in a video message. Famous wine critic James Suckling – who has signed one of the bottles – will send greetings via video as well. Also in attendance will be the photographer, journalist and war correspondent from Trieste, Marino Sterle, who will present his work entitled “Angeli”, a unique and original celebratory collage of photographs which will be on display during the evening and will be sold at auction with a reserve price of HK$ 25,000. This event will therefore give an international debut to the three wines that are made (conceptually, at least) from the grapes of the 4,900 vine growers of the four Veronese denominations (Bardolino, Custoza, Soave and Valpolicella). From these – with the purpose of supporting Italian opera – lots have been selected and blended to create two special bottlings, the white Garganega Verona I.G.T. and the red Corvina Verona I.G.T., accompanied by the Amarone Classico della Valpolicella 2009 from Sartori. The man who created the blends and put his name to the wines is internationally famous oenologist Franco Bernabei, one of the best-known winemakers in Italy. The bottles thus produced have been rendered unique by their three labels, inspired by the most famous posters of the last century, starting off with that of 1913, when the Arena hosted an opera for the first time with the première of Aida. These are real collectors’ pieces, therefore, the revenue from which will be donated in part to the Arena Foundation for the promotion and dissemination of music and opera around the world. Press Office: Carmen Stirn – marketing@sartoninet.com – +39 045 6028011 COCOFUNGO AND THE JEUNES RESTAURATEURS D’EUROPE: MUSHROOMS KNOW NO BOUNDS   From 25th September to 26th October these autumnal products will unite Europe by tempting the palates of the Continent’s gourmets Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, Holland and Slovenia: thanks to CocoFungo, a food and wine event in the Province of Treviso will – for the first time – unite Europe under the banner of mushrooms and of the creativity of the Jeunes Restaurateurs d’Europe. This union will take place on a series of evenings between 25th September and 26th October, in the course of which the six members of CocoFungo (Da Celeste, Barbesin, Miron, Hotel Terme, Da Gigetto and Der Katzlmacher) will play host to a group of colleagues from other parts of Europe, all of whom belong to the association that unites top restaurants from the United Kingdom to Spain. CocoFungo, created 36 years ago by Giuseppe Maffioli and Fernando Raris, is therefore taking on an international dimension, combining one of the most delicious of autumnal products – and a major feature of the cuisine of the Treviso Prealps – with the typical flavours of various European countries. On each date, the host chef will prepare a special menu together with his guest. Inaugurating this partnership will be David Goerne of the Restaurant G.a. / Manoir de Rétival (Normandy, France), who will be at Da Celeste at Venegazzù (TV), where CocoFungo will be featured on 25th and 26th September. On 5th October Ana Ros of Hiša Franko (Slovenia) will be at the Barbesin Restaurant at Castelfranco Veneto (TV). From 10th to 14th October Ristorante Miron at Nervesa Della Battaglia  (TV) will host the event, with Armijn van Nierop of the Hostellerie Vangaelen (Holland) demonstrating his skills in the kitchen. On 15th October the baton will pass to Giovanni Oosters of Vous lé Vous (Hasselt, Belgium) who will be at the Ristorante Hotel Terme at Vittorio Veneto (TV).  On 17th and 18th October the exhibition will cross the borders to reach Munich, in Bavaria (Germany), where at the Osteria Der Katzlmacher there will be Josef Steffner of the Mesnerhaus (Austria). On 22nd, 25th and 26th October CocoFungo will return to the Marca Trevigiana and to the Da Gigetto restaurant at Miane, where Josef Steffner will once again offer a touch of Austrian taste. This absence of borders will be replicated in the “virtual” world as well. Thanks to a new format devised by the OL3 agency, CocoFungo will make its way onto the Internet, opening itself up to the social media. The goal will be to promote a new way of interpreting fine dining, in which quality and fun go absolutely hand in hand, offering a culture of taste that the younger generations increasingly crave as well as a way of approaching a sector – that of food and wine – which has in recent years provided ever greater employment opportunities for young people. The district of the Marca Trevigiana, in particular, represents a real breeding ground for culinary talent: one only has to bear in mind that – in the Province of Treviso alone – there are no less than four hotel and catering colleges. Alessandro Masnaghetti, Kyle Phillips and more

Kyle Phillips (American winewriter, living in Italy) has passed away, couldn’t win his struggle against mother nature’s cruel way of telling us we are nothing more than she let’s us be……… I have known Kyle for many years, appreciating his humour, his hard work (I always saw him to be the second to arrive and certainly the last to leave at numerous tastings, like at Nebbiolo Prima in Alba), his respect for wines and winemakers, always a friendly word, even though it was not his style. We shared quite a few things, like the ’70 music of the Grateful Dead, traditional winemakers and our criticism on the American society he left many years ago, but which was still challenging him.

Bonny Doon looking for new importer in the Netherlands. Residence Wijnen stops importing the wines of Bonny Doon Vineyards. Fonger Kranenburg wrote they ‘kinda stopped’ because of the price-quality ratio. Bonny Doon’s owner Randall Grahm is not easy to categorize. Some find him a lunatic, others a brilliant visionair. Whatever you think of him , he keep surprising, amazing and amusing everyone with his unconventional way of thinking, working, communicating and last but not least; his wines. New distributor Gaja Goessens Professionals in Wine uit Maastricht is the new distributor for Gaja in Belgium. Since Dutch importer J.J.C. Kwast is also working on the Belgian market, it cannot be excluded that Goessens will also offer the wines of Gaja to their Dutch clients.
