NCS werkt graag samen met:

Biseksuele wijnen !?! Bisexual wines !?!

Wines with balls, deliciously slutty wines and other sexist tasting notes. Usually well intentioned, but in general telling more about the lack of vocabulary of the taster, than about the quality of the wine.
The trendy magazine WineLife advised some (female) writers to add more sex to their stories. This is my contribution on how it’s done and how ridiculous it is……

Type Twiggy of Erica Terpstra; Marilyn vos Savant of Jessica Simpson?

Michael Broadbent noteerde
ooit eens: “Ruikt naar
het uniform van een
schoolmeisje….
” Pardon?

over welke sekse beter proeft.

Sex sells & the sky is the limit, we’re going all the way!

Take a walk on the wild side.

De Pedro-Ximenez druiven zijn vooral de basis voor PX-sherry’s;

Extra Dry White Port, Graham’s, Portugal, NV

Zyme, From Black to White, Italië,  2009
Once you go black, you never go back. Of toch?
Wit is wit en zwart is zwart. Toch?

Sauvignon Blanc Reserve, Hannes Sabathi, Oostenrijk, 2007

Le Cigare Blanc, Beeswax Vineyard, Arroyo Seco, Montery County, Californië, 2007

Castello di Semivicoli, Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, Masciarelli, Italië, 2008

Marina Svetic, Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, Masciarelli, Italië, 2008

Gianni Masciarelli was briljant!

Caballo Loco, Valdivieso, Number Nine, Chili
Mannelijke of vrouwelijk?

Vigna Elena, Barolo Riserva, Elvio Cogno, Italië, 2005

Toscaan of Toscaanse?

Look who’s coming to dinner…

Clos Syrah Lèone, Peyre Rose, Coteaux du Languedoc,
Frankrijk, 1995
Ver ontwikkeld? Ja!

A body like Arnold with a Denzel face….?” What a wine…..
uitgeschonken in grote glazen.

5,3% alcohol; 367 gr/ltr restsuiker; zuren 15,6; 26,4 extract

Palo Cortado Almacenista Vides, Lustau

Often, I’m amazed by the large amounts of pointless, sexually oriented terms I hear during tastings. Masculine wines, wines with female character, wines for gays, wines that’ll grow hair on your chest- (breast?), testosterone wines, wines that’ll swing both ways, wines with square balls, lush DD silicone-wines?, wines made by or for men or women, etc. etc.

Sometimes I understand what they’re trying to say, but more often I don’t at all. Why is it that they use these words? Is it a lack or an excess of imagination, the expression of an unsatisfied desire? Many of the words and concepts are disturbing, suggestive and/or incomprehensible. What’s the image one should have when someone’s talking about ‘masculine’ wines? The Arnold Schwarzenegger-type or Woody Allen; Albert Einstein or Lloyd Christmas? And feminine wines? The Twiggy-type or Roseanna; Marilyn vos Savant or Jessica Simpson?

Michael Broadbent once wrote:
“Smells like a schoolgirl’s uniform.”
Excuse me?

Lustful glances when uttering a classification like  ‘lush and slutty in a nice way’ confuses me, especially when it refers to a cheap, tired, flat wine. I suspect that the (always male) taster prefers a heroin-hookers after about thirty customers over an exclusive  €25.000,- a night call girl and probably both over his own wife.

For most Australians, rosé is gay, not very strange, given the popularity of rosé Champagne in the gay scene. And what about the response: “a sweet white wine obviously?” as a woman orders a glass of wine. Equally debatable are the statements made about which sex tastes better.

Sexual stereotypes, sexual prejudice, sexual dogma and silly sexual innuendos have deeply penetrated the world of wine. Many wines and their tasters show their impressive muscles, not seldom to compensate lack of intelligence or length….
To put an end to this nonsense I’ll boldly go where no man has gone before and even further!

No morals, no taboos, nothing sacred is spared,
chastity not longer an option . Sex sells and the miles high club is the limit, we’re going all the way!

I selected not only pure male or exclusively feminine wines, but also less rigid ones. Sturdy masculine wines that are proud of their feminine characteristics and feminine wines with power and more than enough length and added value.

Jean Cocteau once said that the name Marlène Dietrich starts like a caress and ends like a whip lash.

During a provocative afternoon in Restaurant Corona in The Hague this ambiguity could be found in several bisexual wines, pleased coming out of my closet. They proved to be, just like the guests, very ‘open minded’ ,  some true beasts with two backs and ready to score a hole in one.

Perlé Nero, Ferrari, TrentoDoc, Italy, 2004
This black grape takes a walk on the wild side, shows it’s dark side and goes dressed in white. A white sparkling wine made of bisexual blue grapes by one of the very best producers in Italy.

Richly scented, ripe aromas, creamy, impressions of dried apples, apricot and brioche; matured and therefore especially suitable to enjoy with food. The 2005 is now the market and offers more freshness, but in the same matured style.

Fino (from PX), Los Amigos, Perez-Barquero, Spain, NV
The Pedro Ximenez grapes, mainly the basis for PX-sherries, syrupy, dark brown sweet wines that harmonize so beautifully with chocolate. These PX grapes are excommunicated. It’s named Fino, but banished from the bed of the Vinos de Jerez.
Served with appetizer with mackerel  and connecting seamless to it; Beautiful briny tones, nice and dry.

Extra Dry White Port, Graham’s, Portugal, NV
Port, but white and dry. Castrated or just stripped of unnecessary parts such as colour and sweet?
Dry might be a bit exaggerated. The wine is full, more wide than deep and sultry with clear sweet notes, nice fruit and subtle influence of alcohol; Well chilled a delicious summer drink, but also nice in fall or winter with a variety of snacks in front of a fireplace.

Zýmē, From Black to White, Italy, 2009
Once you go black, you never go back. Or do you? White is white and black is black is black, isn’t it? The Rondinella is actually a black (blue) grape, but some vines grew white grapes. Winemaker Sebastiano Celestini cultivated these clones and made this special wine. The white version of a negroid; like Michael Jackson, wacko and brilliant at the same time? Certain about its qualities, insecure about its sex?
60% white Rondinella, complemented wit Golden Traminer, Kerner and Incrizio Manzoni.
Delicate aroma; fresh with aromatic hints of citrus, mint and stone fruits; smooth with a soft touch.

CH (Chardonnay sur Lie), Vino Hort, Czech Republic, 2009
When you stir the soul hard enough, the true spirit will emerge. Fermentation and maceration for one month, 3 times a week bâtonnage, followed by a year on it’s lie in French oak barriques. Bottled without filtering. A lascivious Chardonnay from the Czech Republic; A surprise in every way!
Exciting smell, rich with mineral tones, acacia honey and citric fruits; wide in the mouth and exciting with juice and flavor, well integrated oak, light touch of caramel, subtle bitters and an exemplary balance; very, very good.

Scallops with Sauvignon and Cigare Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc Reserva, Hannes Sabathi, Oostenrijk, 2007
Wood suits some grapes, others are known to prefer a tight steel dress. This is a Sauvignon that is coming out and demonstrates what no one has ever expected. It wears wood with dignity and pride;  this Sauvignon has balls! Probably one of the very best Sauvignons, at least from Austria.
Big and intense in terms of scents, a combination of the Sauvignons from New Zealand, California and the most beautiful ones from the Loire-valley with the typical minerality of the Südsteiermark, all backed up by a well-dosed use of wood, elegant and powerful, opulent and racy, a very fine wine with a unique style.

Le Cigare Blanc, Beeswax Vineyard, Arroyo Seco, Montery County, California, 2007
“A transsexual wine”: according to Randall Graham, the inimitable winemaker from California. A feminine wine with a masculine benefit. A white wine with hoochie coochie tannins, not wrapping it in cloth and ready to mount anyone’s palate. Lush, almost lascivious because of it’s wealth, ripe exotic fruits, aromatic with herbal notes and sweet spices, roundness with fine wood tones; a Rubens-type of wine, provocative and extremely seductive;  Ever seen Winnie de Pooh relish the honey jar? I love to spoon out this bottle.

Castello di Semivicoli, Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, Masciarelli, Italy, ’08 & Marina Svetic, Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, Masciarelli, Italy, 2008

How hermaphroditic a grape can be. The two sides of the Trebbiano; With and without aging in wood. Sinful and virtuous, devilish delight and heavenly pleasure, the Trebbiano is capable of being both, as these wines prove. Gianni Masciarelli was brilliant!

Both wines served with sea bass.
The Castello di Semivicoli shows that wines, aged in steel only, don’t have to be just slender, but can be very fresh and racy. Broad, juicy with an enormous concentration and a lot of tension, lots of fruits, flawless and with great length.

The Marina Svetic as usual rich in richness, ripe fruits, a lot of creamy wood notes with cedar, honey, coconut, some caramel, but most of all great quantities of ripe, tropical fruits; Almost too much of a good thing, but so well-balanced that you can’t stop drinking; as good as the greatest white wines in the world.

Massa Vecchia Rosato, Toscana Igt, Italy, 2006
There is no rosé like this one. Unique, inimitable, biodynamic and much, much more. It’s been called Schizophrenic, but maybe unrestrained and untamed are more accurate descriptions. Terms like masculine and feminine are inadequate here. The color is intense, deeper than a lot of red wines; The scent reveals maturation, long soaking and time in wood for this blend of Aleatico, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malvasia Nera. Impressions of floral tones, ripe red and black fruit and a spicy overtone take turns in scent as well as in taste; Full-bodied and powerful, juicy from beginning to end, defiant and extreme, a food wine or as the subject and center of an inspiring conversation about how a rosé could or should be.

Caballo Loco, Valdivieso, Number Nine, Chile
Maybe ‘Loco’, but mad in a brilliant way. Not from one specific year, but from several vintages. Not of one special grape, but a blend of many. Normally that’s the recipe for an anonymous table wine of questionable quality, but this wine belongs to the top of producer Valdivieso’s creations. Masculine or feminine? Frankenstein or his bride? A monster or a miracle? The ninth edition of the Caballo Loco; thoroughbred or bastard, stallion or mare, gelding or mule?
Somewhat developed color and smell; mocha with spicy tones, speculoos-spices, furry and lots of dark fruit, including soaked plums; intriguing combination of ripe, braised fruits and wood; In the mouth more freshness, more youthful, with a lot of fraîcheur and tension, invites you to explore the wine further, sweet spices in the aftertaste, some liquorice, but above all ripe, slightly braised black fruits; a beautiful wine with a distinctive identity.

Vigna Elena, Barolo Riserva, Elvio Cogno, Italy, 2005
A Barolo, but made from a 100% Nebbiolo clone ‘Rosé’ that may not even be a Nebbiolo at all. So it’s a Barolo that’s possibly not a Barolo. And yet, this wine has everything that makes a great Barolo. Finesse, strength and character and therefore extraordinary attractive to men as well as to women.
What makes this wine so special is its finesse; Color, scent and taste are refined, light, but with character; delicate floral tones of roses against a background of red fruits; a gentle influence of wood from the traditional barrel that was used to age the wine, the ripe, rounded tannin structure provides grip and bite, but it’s the elegance that really marks this wine; a joy to drink.

Sassicaia, Tenute San Guido, Italy, 2005
For many years regarded as the illegal, bastard son, now a royal icon. A top class Bordeaux, but from Tuscany; A top class Tuscan, but without any Sangiovese . A wine that causes confusion. If you don’t like Bordeaux, you will like this wine. If you’re not attracted to Italian wines, you’ll be seduced by this Tuscan anyway. Male or female? The Cabernet is sturdy, yet it’s elegant and subtle; this wine has more , if not all. A hermaphrodite?
He who smells the wine imagines himself in one foot in Bordeaux and the other in Tuscany. Naturally this requests some flexibility and long legs; this wines has both. Delightful ripe black fruits, cool Mediterranean tones, fresh herbs and the correct dosage of wood provides the wine with lenght and depth. Still very playful and youthful; ripe black cherries and a touch of bitter dark chocolate with fresh rosemary; characteristic.

Domaine du Trévallon, VdP des bouches du Rhône, France, ’95
Look who’s coming to dinner…. A mixed marriage. In France you’re send to hell when you blend Syrah with Cabernet. But if you turn it into such a fine wine, you’re forgiven and your status will reach into heaven…
Once, there was this commercial-slogan about plastic: “When Sofia Loren is plastic, than I love plastic.” Maybe blending Cabernet and Syrah is some kind of plastic surgery. Usually there’s no need to help Mother Nature, but oh boy, it looks like perfection can be improved after all.
Still powerful, although developed; clear  mineral accents besides red as well as black fruits, Provencal herbs and wood; nice blend with associations of both grape varieties; Bordeaux as well as Rhône;  peppery and braised blackberries; a very fine wine, still with plenty of potential.

Clos Syrah Lèone, Peyre Rose, Coteaux du Languedoc, France, 1995
Elected the most masculine wine in a competition between masculine and feminine wines some years ago. Maybe masculine, but made by a woman and from ‘la Syrah’, the only feminine grape variety in France.
While opening this ‘grande dame’ I was startled by the very evolved scent; wet leafs, some horse coat, a touch of pencil lead and hardly any fruit.
Without too many expectations the wine was poured. I smelled the wine again and notice black ripe fruits, terroir and smokey tones emerging. The taste surprised me even more; still fruit, not dried out, but elegant and well balanced, fresh acidity and a willful aftertaste in which all scent and taste components found and merged into each other. Developed? Yes! Over the top? No, still not. A very special experience that everyone kept talking about for a long time; impressive; a philosophical wine.

Rioja Gran Reserva Especial Castello Ygay, Marqués de Murrieta, Spain, 1978
Since 1850 only 10 of these wines are made. It took a while for this wine to lose its virginity. It wore it’s wooden chastity belt for no less than 216 months. After an unparalleled period of aging in wood it’s finally ready to be deflowered. The scent is unusual; a lot of evolution, but also finesse, strength, elegance and especially a lot of character; impressions of dried red fruits, flowers and herbs, sweet key of wood, spices, light touch of special Dutch liquorices (sal ammoniac) in smell and taste; high acidity, tones of autumn leafs and mushrooms, but mainly the constantly returning associations with dried red fruits. A beautiful, unique wine that reflects the pride, history and tradition that is fortunately continued by the current owner Vicente Dalmau Cebrian-Sagarriga y Suarez-Llanos.

Amarone Riserva, Quintarelli, Italy 1995
A wine that in fact cannot exist, but is made anyway, even though only in extremely good years. It is without any doubt one of the finest wines in the world. A powerful masculine wine, but with an unprecedented sophistication that is generally ascribed to women. Convincing finesse and endless length. Wasn’t it ‘En Vogue’ that sung: “A body like Arnold with a Denzel face….?” What a wine….
Immediately decanted on arrival and about four hours later served in big glasses. This wine prefers air and space, fanning out wide with all characteristics of a great Amarone; cherry fruit, dark chocolate, more spices than herbs; warm glow of traditional wood, a mineral touch and nearly endless depth and length; keep you smelling and smiling, discovering more fruit nuances every time; red and black fruit, citrus fruit, ripe fresh fruit, candied fruit as well as blossom, dried and fresh. Although smelling it will keep you occupied for quite some time (without ever boring you) the taste offers you even more. Lovely ripe fruit, after more than 15 years still very young and extremely fresh; wide and deep with unequaled tension; ripe cherries and chocolate dominate, with a subtle bitterness in the background and the perfect ratio between sweetness and acidity. You almost wonder why so many people are still wasting their time by drinking other wines…..

Mas Baux, Muscat de Rivesaltes, France, 2010
As I announced the topic ‘Bisexual wines’, this wine was instantly recommended by friend and colleague Anne Serres. Seductively sweet with a fraîcheur like a cooling summer breeze from the ocean. A kiss with a bite.
While swirling the gentle, luxuriant muscat tones emerge in the glass; not common and excessively but precise, fresh and with finesse; also in the mouth this wine shows how subtle a muscat can be; delicate sweet spices, candied citrus fruit, some apricot and peach, mango and papaya. Good acidity ensures that the sweetness doesn’t dominate and the wine remains digestable. A slender muscat with a pretty sweetness and in the end a little bit of bitter notes, it finishes its fruity kiss with a playful bite in your lip; naughty….

Ryzlink Vlaŝskŷ, Ledové Víno, Vinařství Volařík, Czech Republic, 2010
Icewine, but definitely not frigid….
5,3% of alcohol; 367 gr/ltr sugar residue; acidity 15,6; 26,4 extract.
Smelling this wine is a treat, a fruit basket filled with tropical and exotic fruit; pineapple, fresh as well as candied and partially dried, but also citrus fruit and nuts, sweet spices like cinnamon, honey and raisins, it goes on and on; beautifully concentrated in fruit with great finesse because of a perfect level of acidity and exemplary balance; the acids in 2010 are almost cutting edge and give the wine a lot of energy and require a trained palette. An experience and the proof that the Czech Republic has great terroir for extraordinary fine sweet wines.

Palo Cortado Almacenista Vides, Lustau
Often called ‘the transsexual’ amongst the Vinos de Jerez. Born as a Fino, but soon transformed into an Oloroso. On the way to adulthood it gets rid of its blanket of flor in order to dress in the wooded aromas of an Oloroso. Its origin however is an integral part of it, and that duality makes the Palo Cortado a wine that swings both ways.
Deep gold and amber, in the nose an intriguing combination of tobacco, leather, dried dates and figs, hint of ginger, coffee, chocolate and nuts. Beautifully full and rich structured in the mouth, subdued sweetness, excellent balance and great length, a worthy closing.

Conclusion?
The wines above show beyond any doubt that we should stop limiting ourselves by sectarianism, condemning wines based on our sexual frustrations. It’s  better to make love, than talk about sex and enjoy wines instead of whining about it…
